Contrast Therapy Explained

The term contrast therapy isn’t always widely recognized. In many cases people are more familiar with the individual components of the therapy. Below we discuss what contrast therapy is, how it works and the audiences it is beneficial for…hint, anyone.

What is Contrast Therapy?

Contrast therapy is a recovery technique that has you alternate between brief periods of heat and cold exposure. The alternation is a purposeful shift between extreme temperatures designed to trigger the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

While rising in popularity, contrast therapy is not a new concept, variations have been used for centuries across different cultures with roots in ancient civilizations like Greece and Rome  to assist in treating health related conditions.

Modern adaptations often focus on specific protocols, starting with heat through methods like infrared sauna, hot water or hot packs and ending each cycle with cold water immersion.

How Does Contrast Therapy Work?

Supported by thought leadership from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, the efficacy of contrast therapy stems from its impact on the circulatory system. Cold exposure prompts vasoconstriction, narrowing blood vessels and reducing blood flow to extremities. Alternately, heat exposure causes vasodilation, the widening of blood vessels to increase blood flow. This cyclical process of vasoconstriction and vasodilation creates a ‘pumping’ action, aiding in the removal of metabolic waste and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues.  This process can help with inflammation, muscle recovery, and overall cellular function.

Key Components of Contrast Therapy: Cold Plunge and Infrared Sauna

A typical in-studio contrast therapy session utilizes an infrared sauna (or the like) and a cold plunge with each therapy used in alternating sequence.

  • Infrared Sauna - use near, mid and far infrared light to heat the body from within, inducing a deep sweat. This is a contrast to traditional saunas that heat the air around you.  The infrared sauna helps to release toxins and promote relaxation.
  • Cold Plunge - Involves immersing the body in cold water, for a short periods of time.
